Document Level Aspects

Current machine translation research is concerned about translation each sentence independently. Considering the document as a whole allows to resolve certain ambiguities and inconsistencies.

Document Level Aspects is the main subject of 48 publications. 13 are discussed here.

Foster et al. (2010) propose to look at document structure during translation. Applying this idea to Canadian Hansard translation, they tag each sentence with features (such as kind of session, identity of the speaker, time period), and use domain adaptation methods to balance between a model trained from similar data and a background model.
Consistency Carpuat and Simard (2012); Hardmeier et al. (2012); Ture et al. (2012); Xiao et al. (2011); He et al. (2011).
Discourse connectives Meyer et al. (2012); Meyer and Popescu-Belis (2012).
Translation of pronouns often requires information from previously translated sentences. Pronouns typically refer to noun phrases whose gender may not be equivalent during translation (in German the sun is female, in French male, in German neutral). Properly translating pronouns hence requires co-reference resolution and tracking of the noun's translation, often over multiple sentences. Implementing such an approach, Nagard and Koehn (2010) find that the quality of existing co-reference resolution algorithms may not be sufficient to obtain significant gains. Hardmeier and Federico (2010) model pronoun translation with a word dependency model that also allows for handling of pronouns whose antecedent occurs in the same sentence. (Guillou, 2012; Russo et al., 2012). The problem of pronoun translations may be harder by source languages where the pronouns are dropped, such as Japanese, so during translation the insertion of pronouns has to be considered, in addition to morphological concerns (Taira et al., 2012).
