Speech Translation

Speech technology, both speech recognition and speech synthesis, share a lot of methods and research paradigms with statistical machine translation. Hence combining these technologies into speech translation is an appealing proposition.

Speech Translation is the main subject of 84 publications. 10 are discussed here.

Publications

There has been increasing interest in integrating speech recognition and machine translation (Zhang et al., 2004). In speech-to-speech translation systems, a speech generator needs to be added as final step (Sumita et al., 2007). Vilar et al. (2005) gives an overview of the work of integrating speech recognition and machine translation in the TC-Star project. Often n-best lists are passed from the speech recognizer to the translation system (Lee et al., 2007). Interfacing the output of a speech recognizer and a machine translation system raises problems such as sentence segmentation and punctuation prediction (Matusov et al., 2006), adding this to the pipeline may require extension of the lattice that is passed to the machine translation component (Bertoldi et al., 2007). For limited domains, real-time speech-to-speech systems have been implemented and deployed in the field, such as for force protection (Bach et al., 2007). It is not too far of a step to simultaneously translate speech into multiple languages (Pérez et al., 2007; Pérez et al., 2007b).
Another way to extend the modality of machine translation is to tackle sign language translation. Morrissey (2011) compare different transcription systems for sign language and use a phrase-based system to translate it into plain text.
